Climate Change Balmain Rozelle

Climate Change Balmain-Rozelle is a collective of local residents who have come together out of mutual distress over Australia's excessive greenhouse gas emissions and the world our children will inherit.

We are a non-partisan, apolitical group which is firmly rooted in the local community.

Our approach is to inform people about the dangers of climate change, to expose the links between the rampant fossil fuel industry and the lack of genuine commitment to building the 'renewables' industry, and to enable everyone in the community to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and speak out to call for rapid transition to a clean energy economy.

Like dozens of other groups around Australia, we've been door-knocking.

And last week we (that is, Jenny Curtis, Derek Bolton and me) took our results to our local member Tanya Plibersek (Federal MP for Sydney and Minister for Human Services) at her constituency office in Broadway.

In today's Canberra Times, Greens senator, Christine Milne, stated, almost verbatim, 100% Renewables demand for Australia to implement the transition from fossil fuels to renewables.

''While Labor is still wedded to its outdated target to reduce Australia's pollution by 60per cent by 2050, the Greens read and understand the climate science and are committed to setting Australia on the path to a zero emissions economy as soon as possible,'' Senator Milne said.

Yesterday I found myself talking to 8,000 people! It was a vibrant and peaceful gathering, full of people who, it seemed to me, were celebrating the possibility that we may eventually be moving towards a low carbon future.

The Australian Conservation Fund (ACF) has recently published a report detailing the $12 billion of subsidies being paid in support of fossil fuels: http://www.acfonline.org.au/uploads/res/climate_expenditure_and_subsidies.pdf

Wouldn't be great if this hypocrisy was turned around 180% and those funds given to renewables!  There'd be no need for a market based carbon pollution price and they could get on with implementing  a national FiT insteadl!!

Today, I'm writing through bleary eyes home in Sydney following my return from six weekends of campaign workshops in six towns across the country. I'm not quite sure what city I'm in and my bedroom looks like a hurricane has hit, hurling used butchers paper, scrunched clothes and old flyers around the room.

My topsy turvy home life is only matched by the topsy turvy world outside - a world where angry Abbott and his attempted people's revolt, together with parts of the the media, are doing their darnedest to block any action on climate change.

I can't tell you how good it felt to be talking about the campaign with mums at soccer yesterday. Everyone loves renewable energy!! People would be happy to put a sticker on their car...

I generally start off by flagging that polling tells us that the vast majority of people in Oz are incredibly supportive of renewable energy (this they already know of course) - and that this campaign is all about giving the public a place to express that enthusiasm.
